Good. With rumours of Lucio leaving (which I am sure Van Buyten is monitoring) then we need him and he has a better chance. I like him and it is true that he has been a devoted Bayern player.

Brief lay-off for Van Buyten

Quote:
It’s rare that an injured player smiles, but Daniel van Buyten managed at least a grin on Friday afternoon. “It’s not as bad as we first thought. I’m only out for a couple of days,” the Belgian reported at Bayern’s training base in Donaueschingen: “I hope it’ll be cured by a bit of rest.” Earlier in the day, he cut a sorry figure in the Öschberghof lobby, ruminating on a potentially serious setback.

Van Buyten injured his right knee during the morning workout in Munich on Thursday, but an MRI scan conducted by team doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt showed that the player had suffered nothing worse than a sprain. He will be allowed to resume jogging at the weekend, before rejoining the squad by the middle or end of next week.

All in all, it could have been a whole lot worse for the 31-year-old centre-back. “Naturally, I’m a bid down. It’s a bad time to get injured,” Van Buyten observed. Coach Louis van Gaal is right at this moment working on his starting line-up for the new campaign. However, the Belgian colossus will only be sidelined in the battle for places for a short time. “I’ll come back and pick up the pre-season programme where I left off.”

Van Buyten made 18 Bundesliga appearances last term, four of them as a substitute. “My attitude is the same as every year: I want to play as often as possible, and I’ll do everything I can to achieve that.” Lucio’s switch to Inter Milan means his chances of playing are “a little bit bigger,” he feels. Daniel is up against fellow right-footers Martin Demichelis and Breno for a place in central defence. Van Gaal has publicly stated his preference for one left-footed centre-half in his back four.

Van Buyten will now spend the next couple of days working with specialist rehab coach Thomas Wilhelmi – and he will not be alone. His personal friend Franck Ribéry is also restricted to light exercise with an inflamed knee. “Franck is doing everything he can to get back on the pitch as soon as possible,” Van Buyten reported.

I hope we can see the van Buyten, who was captain from Hamburg and a great central defender, next year in Bayern. Although I must say this again: Holger Badstuber will be a starter.

Just look at this quote from fcb.de:

Van Buyten questions Klinsmann

Quote:
Bayern Munich defender Daniel van Buyten has criticised his former coach Jurgen Klinsmann for not giving him a fair chance last season.

The Belgian spent much of the season sitting on the bench and was never able to force his way into Klinsmann's plans, despite being given plenty of positive feedback.

He may well profit from the departure of Lucio to Inter Milan to become a first-team regular under new Bayern coach Louis van Gaal this season, but he said he had "never experienced" the way he was treated by the Dutchman's predecessor.

"The coach (Klinsmann) spoke with me a lot, but with hindsight I have the feeling that he did not always tell me the truth," he said at a press conference.

"Last season, there were a few problems which I couldn't really understand."

The 31-year-old was clear that his exclusion from the squad for the Champions League quarter-final tie with Barcelona had been the lowest ebb of his year under Klinsmann.

"That was hard to swallow," he added. "I have never experienced anything like that."

A knee injury picked up in training on Friday may have set van Buyten back in his battle to prove van Gaal that he should be given a place at the heart of his defence next season.

The Belgian faces competition from Martin Demichelis, Breno and youngster Holger Badstuber, who are all vying for two places in the centre of a back four.

Van Buyten: "I joined Bayern Munich in 2006 in order to become an important first team player and it looks like I will finally become a regular starter this term. I'm getting stronger by the day."

"I'm very happy with the arrival of Van Gaal. He's giving everybody the same treatment and is always honest to the players. That was totally different last campaign. We never knew what would happen after a bad match."

Van Buyten has really seemed to thrive under van Gaal. Admittedly I've only seen the highlights of yesterday's match on FCB.tv, but I'll watch the match in full this evening on satellite. But it just seems that Daniel has come on this season and taken this opportunity to play.

Van Buyten was solid yesterday, made some decisive tackles and indeed was the defensive leader.
